| Tom getting ready for the band concert. |
Hi! My name is Patty Rimkunas. My son Thomas and I will be hosting the Kids and Teens Dyspraxia Blog for Dyspraxia USA. Tom is 10 years old and suffers from dyspraxia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. But does he let that slow him down? No way! He goes full speed ahead at life every single day, attempting things that can be difficult for a dyspraxic child to do such as swimming, German folk dancing, and playing the saxophone. I hope you will join us as we share our adventures and challenges with all of you and you share yours with us. We will be sharing Tom's latest challenge with all of you as well: homeschooling! When Tom was not granted a scribe for his Connecticut State Mastery Test this month, we were told by the Board of Education that our only option to avoid testing was for my husband and I to pull Tom out of school for a month. So today we did just that. I am very scared and excited. I have never been a rebel in my entire life and have never challenged "the system". But I felt that it had to be done. Tom was getting sick and stressed out by the mere thought of taking this exam that he knew he didn't have a fair chance of doing well on. Today he is already feeling better.
Patty, you know I am with you 1000%! The system that we hand over our children to - beats them up & it is up to parents like us to save them! I see the same sparkle in Tom's eyes that Martina has! Homeschooling (& Un-Schooling) will encourage that sparkle to grow & flourish! There is no better feeling than when you and your husband look at each other and say "wow, so HAPPY we made this choice!" Our children see & experience life differently, so why not give them the special education that they deserve...at home with us, who understand & respect them in ways no school system ever will! Excellent choice!! Everyday is an adventure!!
ReplyDeleteI have an 8 year old who has has his diagnosis a little over a year, but we are just beginning to really be able to put our fingers on the many things Dyspraxia is effecting for him at school and at home. We aren't homeschooling him, because ultimately he NEEDS the structure of school...though I can identify with his Dyspraxia since I suspect I have it to a milder degree, I was homeschooled...but I never really cared about structure. But I had to have the talk with my son today actually, about how he may just never "fit in" and that's OK...that one or two good friends are way more worth it than being the most popular kid in school. Though that's hard for him, as he's a natural showman.
